On November 7, 2003, the St. Thomas Aquinas Girls Flag Football Cardinals reached the finals
after a nail-biting 14-13 victory over Brampton Centennial Bucks on November 4th. With
four players unavailable at game time, several girls were forced to play both ways.
The Mayfield Mavericks scored a touchdown early in the second half, but the Cardinals
fought back with a long bomb from quarterback Meghan Hoffberg to wide receiver Sabrina
Chirco that ended with a 60-yard touchdown, leaving the teams tied 6-6 at the half.
In the second half, all three of the team's ill players dragged their bodies onto to the field
to join their teammates, and they began to dominate the second half, leading to a touchdown
run by Meghan Hoffberg and a 12-6 lead. The key play for the Cardinals occurred in the
4th quarter, with speedy Cortney Stewart catching Mayfields quarterback in the Mayfield end
zone and grabbing a 2-point safety touch which turned out to be the winning points. Mayfield
scored a late touchdown, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals won their first ever Girls
Football Championship 14-12. Congratulations to all the players, and coaches Sullivan
and Stangret.
Coach Sullivan said after the game that he was proud of the girls gutsy effort and their
outstanding second half play, and that, of course, mathematics rules. Or something to
that effect - the webmaster is really weak in proper quote gathering. On the next
five pages are pictures from the Region of Peel Championship game.
