Black History Month Assembly
February 10, 2009

The St. Thomas Aquinas community celebrated Black History month with jazz, dances and inspirational words from Martin Luther King, Barack Obama, as well as poet Maya Angelou's stirring "Phenomenal Woman". We were also fortunate enough to have author Mariatu Kamara visit Aquinas to talk about her experience in her native Sierra Leone, where a decade ago she had her hands cut off by child soldiers who attacked her village, described in her new book "Bite Of The Mango". She immigrated to Canada, and started formal schooling for the first time at 16 years of age, and at 22, now attends George Brown College. She emphasized forgiveness of those who might wrong us, and the importance of education, especially for girls.
