Over 200 enthusiastic students came out on a Friday night to have some fun and learn about conditions in other parts of the
world, from the devastation in Haiti and Japan, to the civil wars in Sierra Leone and Cote d'Ivoire, to the
privatization of water in places like Bolivia, to the point where citizens who capture rain water are legally required
to pay for the privilege of using it to the exploiting corporations who have monopolized water rights in the country.
The climax of the evening was a pep talk from MTV personality and comic Derek Forgie, who gave a detailed analysis as to
why bottled water is wasteful of resources, ridiculously overpriced and a triumph of marketing over need (except in the
case of earthquake devastation in places like Haiti and Japan). Four students did a blind taste test of tap water, Dasani,
some other supermarket bottled water and imported Fiji water, and when asked to select what they thought was the tap water,
three of the four selected the chichi Fiji water. The evening ended with a feast featuring copious quantities of food
prepared by the Aquinas Hospitality classes to end the students' fast they had begun on Thursday evening.
