September 22, 2022

Above: After a short ride up into the Valley of the Kings, we walk into the main tomb section. For a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, rock-cut tombs were excavated for the pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom.

1 to 3 show a map, then a recreation of the stages in building a tomb, from excavation to preparing the walls to drawing, carving and painting.

4 and 5 shows the quick transit through the mountains.

6 shows workers digging and excavating around the Tombs of Ramesses V and Vi.

7 and 8 guide Ahmed talks about the best tombs to visit out of the 8 available, and how one massive tomb housed the nearly 70 sons of Ramesses II.

9 to 11 show us entering the one room Tomb of Ramesses I, ruler just over a year 1292-1290 BC, father of the Great Ramesses II.

12 shows snakes on a wall ... the great snake Mehen protects Ramesses I, snakes symbolizizing royalty and the pharaoh's role
as lawmaker and maintainer of order, preventing the forces of chaos to hurt the Egyptian people.
