Madeira
September 19, 2023

On Day 4 in the morning and early afternoon, I participated in a levada walk by the Levada do Caniçal on the hills above Machico. The city of Machico was the first capital of Madeira Island and extends in a small basin from south to north. It was founded and built by the Portuguese explorer João Gonçalves Zarco in 1419. Overnight rains made the trail muddy, as did a group of cyclists racing through the mud as part of their trek around Madeira Island.

In the mid-afternoon, I toured around Funchal, including touring inside Saint John the Evangelist Church, part of the Jesuit College, a seventeenth century monument featuring lots of paintings, tile works and frescos, plus numerous gilded altars in side chapels, plus gelato at The Ritz.
