Above: The gardens in Parque Terra Nostra. Around 1775, a wealthy merchant from Boston became an Honorary American Consul in São Miguel.
He built a simple wooden summer house, with a pool in front, with an island in the centre, both surrounded by trees that were brought in mainly from North America.
