On Day 7, Dr. J got up at 2 a.m. to fall into the van of Mountain Racers Bike Tour to watch the sunrise at Mt. Haleakala, and then bike down the side of the volcano to Paia on the north-central Maui coast.

Above: About 45 minutes before sunrise on 10,023 foot high Mt. Haleakala, a dormant volcano since 1798. Carbon dating has shown the volcano tends to erupt every 200 years or so, meaning Haleakala is due.

Below: Pictures 1 to 2 shows the moon at about 5:15 a.m. over southern Maui
Pictures 4, 5 and 8 to 11 show the volcano observation area packed with people in coats and gloves, although it was about 53 F. with brisk winds, but not too bad.
Pictures 3, 6 and 7 are views of the horizon above the clouds, prior to sunrise.
