On Day 9, we left Marrakech for the Atlantic coast of Morocco and the city of Essaouira. Along the way we drove through the Argan tree growing area of the country and stopped at the entirely female run and operated Arganmade Co-operative, which creates argan oils for skin products and edible foods, most importantly honey. Arriving in Essaouira, a city of around 80,000 people, we toured and had lunch on our own in the city's medina right beside the Atlantic Ocean. Considered one of the best ports in Morocco, it was used by Carthage in the 5th century BC, the Romans in the 3rd century AD, was a Portuguese stronghold in the early 14th century, then a French colony in the early 15th century, and a Berber and Moroccan port the rest of the time.

Above: The train station in Marrakech. Crosby, Stills and Nash sang about the Marrakech Express train, but we didn't see it or any other train in Morocco, and very few train tracks anywhere.

1 to 3 show breakfast, the pool at the Adam Park Hotel, and the Japanese gardens there seen from my balcony.

5 is the Marrakech Opera Hotel, not the actual opera.

6 and 7 show a neighbourhood and tire store in Marrakech.

8 to 10 show the desert countryside leaving Marrakech.

11 shows a government building in Souihla, just outside of Marrkech.
