Santorini (Thira)
July 19, 2018

On Day 8, after getting back to Fira from Ancient Thera, I went on the bus from Fira to the village of Oia. When you see pictures of Santorini, you most often see ones from the sun-drenched cliffs of Oia, the blue-domed churches, the water below and the island of Therasia on the left. But besides the excellent gelato at Lolita's, possibly the best reason to go to Oia is to take the almost 300 steps down the cliffs to Ammoudi Bay below (coming back up is not as much fun). There it is cooler, but the boats dropping off fish and seafood mean the food at the bay restaurants is fresh. The grilled octopus with lemon and olive oil is outstanding, as was the grilled squid I had last year. After that, it was back to Fira and probably the best of the three sunsets.

Above: The tile mosaic at the main entrance to Ekklisia Panagia Platsani.

1 shows the northern coast of Santori, north of Oia.

2 shows the seletion of Gelato at Lolita's Gelato, near the bus station in Oia.

3 and 4 show the front of the church in the main square of Oia, the Ekklisia Panagia Platsani.

5 to 11 show views both of the west and east sides of Oia, and the numerous churches and chapels in the village.
In #10 the Agios Spiridonas Church with two left domes, and Anastasi Church at right.
