Madeira Island
October 1, 2019

On Day 2, I took a very with humourous guide and driver Sebastiano. The tour started with nice views in Camacha to the uninhabited islands Ilhas Desertas. We then drove up to the third highest peak on the island, Pico do Arieiro at 1818 metres (the highest and second highest are close by ... Pico Ruivo at 1862 metres and Pico das Torres at 1851 metres, both close by and walkable from Pico do Arieiro). Unfortunately, we only had 30 minutes here so couldn't walk too far. The tour continued towards the northeast coast, stopping at the trout fish farm at Ribeiro Frio. Then we continued on, passing through the valley going to Faial. These pages cover the tour up until this point.

We reached our main destination, the town of Santana (named after the Virgin Mary's mother, Saint Ana), where we stopped for lunch or a snack (I enjoyed a couple of Portuguese tarts, which are called on Madeira Island, tarts), and spent an hour and half in a very nice town. After that we drove back along the east coast of the island through Machico and Santa Cruz before arriving back in Funchal.
