Above: Ornate wood and stucco carvings on the walls in the Petit Ryad of the Bahia Palace in Marrakech. The palace was first begun by Si Musa, grand vizier (the effective head of government on behalf of the sultan or king) of Sultan Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman, in 1859 and then continued and e xpanded by his son Si Ba Ahmed ibn Musa, grand vizier of Sultan Moulay Abdelaziz between 1894 and 1900. Interestingly, Si Musa was a descendant of black slaves who served the royal palace, and then rose through the ranks.

1 to 3 show the gardens by the entrance to the Bahia Palace, and a palace map.

4 and 5 are views within the Petit Ryad (small garden), including an example of the stucco carvings.

6 to 11 show painted wood ceilings, fireplaces, tile art work, stucco carvings and rooms in and around the Petite Cour (small courtyard).
