1 to 3 are in Independence Square (or Central Park), the main square of the city of Puerto Plata. The Dominican Republic gained its independence in 1844. The park was constructed as a tribute to general Luperón, who offered the park to the city of Puerto Plata. The statues in the first picture are of Juan Pablo Duarte and General Gregorio Luperón. Duarte organized and promoted La Trinitaria, a secret society that eventually led to the Dominican revolt and independence from Haitian rule in 1844 and the start of the Dominican War of Independence, which successfully ended in 1856. He is considered the father of the Dominican Republic. Luperón was a leader in the Dominican Restoration War from 1863 to 1865 and successfully regained independence from Spain.
