Above: Cable cars connect Monte to the Madeira Botanical Garden over a valley above Funchal.
1 is the walk along Avenida do Infante leading into central Funchal.
2 is a statue of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, who spent the winter and spring of 1861 in Madeira to recover from illness coughing fits.
It worked, but after her return to Austria in May 1861, the coughing fits returned.
3 to 5 show the Parque de Santa Catarina.
6 and 7 show rotunda fountains and boulevard along Avenida do Infante.
8 to 11 show the tile art outside the Ritz restaurant and hotel on Avenida do Infante.
