Above: Naissance de Vénus (The Birth of Venus), by Alexandre Cabanel, 1881. Painting historical, religious and mythical works in the academic style was preferred by the art establishment. The Salon and public loved his work, and he had dozens of pupils, many of whom went on to successful careers, such as Pierre Auguste Cot, Henri Gervex, Aristide Maillol and Henri Regnault.
